Half of the population in the Third World has not reached the age of twenty. Many children come from low-income homes which suffer from malnutrition, poor housing, insufficient medical care, and lack of education. These problems result in a high infant mortality rate, preventable illnesses, illiteracy, and poor jobs. Child sponsorship can produce a radical change in the future of these children.
What is Child Sponsorship?
Child sponsorship is long distance aid to children. If you contribute $35.00 CDN or $28.00 US per month, we can provide a child in the developing world with food, clothing, medical care, and Christian education. Word & Deed sponsors impoverished children in many countries, some of which include Burkina Faso, Colombia, and Haiti. Some of the children are orphans; others have lost a parent. Child sponsorship includes four things:
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
MEDICAL ATTENTION
NUTRITION
PHYSICAL PROVISION
A, B, C…is the Key
When Word & Deed first began its work in the seventies the aid was primarily focused on providing children with food to save their lives. Now education is taking precedence and in most cases sponsorship is geared to schools where the children receive a hot meal every day. At most of the schools a uniform is also provided.
Education gives children a greater advantage in life. They will have better job opportunities and understand the importance of balanced meals and personal hygiene. Most importantly, children in our schools learn about God.
Biblical Message
The only criteria for admission to a school, orphanage, or boarding school, is the degree of poverty the child is living in. Many children accepted into the various programs come from non-Christian homes. The children hear Bible stories, learn memory work, and sing Christian songs. Our hope and prayer is that the stories, memory work, and songs will go home with the children. Word & Deed's conviction that aid should go hand-in-hand with a Biblical witness is exemplified here.
When you Become a Sponsor…
When you become a sponsor, you receive a photo and a brief description of the child's situation. The child will send correspondence twice a year and you have the opportunity to send greetings to the child. Generally, when a sponsor sends greetings to their child it encourages the child to respond.
We also have a group sponsorship program, which means your support goes to a
child who is part of a group. With group sponsorship you receive an update
about the group that the child is in, but you do not have personal contact
with the child. This lowers administrative costs and we pass on the savings to you.
Group Sponsorship
For $33.00 CDN or $27.00 US, you can sponsor a child who is part of a group. You will receive a description of the project that the child is in and every year you will receive an update about the project. This type of sponsorship excludes a photo and there is no personal contact with the child.
Individual Sponsorsip
For $35.00 CDN or $28.00 US, you are given the opportunity to correspond with a specific child. You will receive a photo and some information about the child and his/her family situation. You will receive an updated photo every two years so you can see how the child has grown.
