By Rick Postma as referenced in Winter 2012 The recent passing of 56-year-old Steve Jobs, former head of Apple Corp. and one of the richest men in the world, reinforces the fact that fabulous wealth can do little to delay one of the horrible consequences of sin; “from dust you are and to dust you will return.” For those without the hope of eternal life, the prospect of death must be truly horrible. Even for Christians, the shadow of death is a grim prospect. But the birth of the Savior and His role as Archegos (literally “path-breaker” who has gone before His people through death) brings us encouragement so that “though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil …” (Psalm 23:4). As generation gives way to generation in North America, billions of dollars change hands. In fact some estimate that as much as $25 trillion will be changing hands as wealth accumulated in the post-World War II era passes on to younger generations. In short, more wealth is and will change hands in the coming years than at any other time in history. Who will benefit? Most people, when considering their legacy, will think of their children and this is only natural. But, assuming that you, dear reader, are one of those planning your legacy, have you thought about how else the bountiful gifts the Lord has blessed you with may be used in the furtherance of His Kingdom here on earth, even after you are gone? The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof! Here is an opportunity to make an impact, perhaps a significant impact, on the work of the Lord that may continue long after you have left this earthly orb. An important question to consider is, how much do your children need? Here is one approach to consider: Add a child named Charity to your will and then split your assets among all your “children”. So, if you have four natural children, the addition of Charity will mean the pie gets split into five pieces now instead of four. Now you take the Charity piece and identify several charities who will receive this part of your legacy. Pray over which organizations to include. There are both local and foreign ministries which are critical for strengthening as well as extending God’s Kingdom. Yes, on behalf of Word & Deed, I ask that you prayerfully consider including our ministry in this list. Here is your opportunity to have a big impact on the future!
