In the wake of Hurricane Felix (2007) Word & Deed partnered with Word & Deed Nicaragua to teach the community of Santa Marta agricultural techniques. This community has experienced great success, by the Lord’s blessing, and has tended a communal garden producing a variety of vegetables that would ordinarily have to be brought in from towns 50 – 80 kilometres away. Private plots are now being cultivated, so that families can put their newfound knowledge into practice for the benefit of their own families.

Carlos Coffin, project director of Word & Deed Nicaragua, has proposed that a similar project be undertaken in the community of Dakura. They have already benefited from a Word & Deed supported Home Rebuilding Project and a Wire Fence Project, which secured their arable land. Now, they will receive seeds, education on diverse agricultural subjects and technical support in order to cultivate that land.
