Word & Deed's Bernie Pennings and John Otten, together with supporter John Langendoen, recently returned from a project visit to Nicaragua. Word & Deed's involvement began in the wake of Hurricane Felix which devastated Nicaragua in 2007. Homes were destroyed and the main livelihood of most Nicaraguans – fishing – was no longer available as a primary source of sustainability due to drastic changes in the ecosystem.

In the wake of Hurricane Felix (2007) Word & Deed partnered with Word & Deed Nicaragua to teach the community of Santa Marta agricultural techniques. This community has experienced great success, by the Lord’s blessing, and has tended a communal garden producing a variety of vegetables that would ordinarily have to be brought in from towns 50 – 80 kilometres away. Flying over Nicaragua 7000 feet above the ground in a Cessna Caravan provides plenty of scenery. As we flew, we saw many abandoned farms, a result of the political violence of the 1990’s. We also saw vast tracts of empty land dotted by only a few broken and twisted trees, scars of Hurricane Felix that devastated Nicaragua in 2007. Update from Nicaragua: By Carlos Coffin
Approximately 21 months ago hurricane Felix thundered past, destroying several miskito communities in the Port Cabezas municipality of Nicaragua. The aid offered to the communities by Word & Deed through the ministry of her local partner in Nicaragua has been a great blessing.

Rebuilding after Hurricane Felix: By Corney Les
We woke up to the usual crowing of the rooster. It was just after 4:30 am in Puerto Cabezas on the east coast of Nicaragua along the Caribbean Sea. Any remaining traces of sleepiness are removed by an unfortunately cold shower. The friendly motel staff served us a breakfast in the motel kitchen of eggs, rice, bread, fruit and coffee.
