Our partners at the Lizulu Orphan Care Centre in Malawi have long had difficulty transporting water to their orphan care centre. Water is needed for both sanitation as well as for cooking the meals of 360 orphans and, in the past, this water has had to be carried from about a kilometre away (both ways)! At times, our project partners have even had to pay workers to carry this water from the source. Because this system is neither dependable nor efficient, in 2008 the Lizulu Orphan Care Project in Malawi received funding from Word & Deed to dig a well that would end these long time water problems.

Although our partners received funding for their bore hole in September 2008, a series of unreliable contractors delayed the actual drilling until early 2010. Though agreements were signed as early as October 2008, the contractors our partners hired were negligent. The actual work of digging a well was delayed by months due to broken equipment, tardiness, and difficulty in finding an appropriate place to drill.

By early 2010 they were successful in finding a surveyor who was able to confirm with certainty that water could be found near the Lizulu Orphan Care Centre. In March 2010 the drillers were able to find water (after two unsuccessful attempts) 500 metres from the centre at 39 meters deep. Although it was hoped that water would be available nearer to the centre than this, we and our partners thank God for the success of this third attempt.

The new well is currently operational, but funding for 500 metres of pipe is being provided to our partners in order to increase the efficiency of this project.
