In May 2009, a bridge in Monjas, a town in the department of Jalapa, Guatemala, was destroyed due to a severe tropical storm called Agatha. This bridge connected several very poor villages to the town and was the only access for many to come to purchase food or supplies; and for children to attend local schools, including La Palabra, which is supported by sponsors of Word & Deed.
AMG, with the thoughtful support of Word & Deed, a local church, and the municipality, joined forces to rebuild the bridge and reestablish the connection between these communities. The bridge is now reopened and stands to show what we can do together following a such a disaster. 600 families and more than 250 students of our school now have safe access to Monjas. What a blessing!
This wonderful new bridge was constructed with solid bases of reinforced concrete, steel structures, wooden planks, and heavy tension cables to support the entire bridge. Protective fencing was included to keep children safe as they cross.

The total investment in the project was approximately $7,500 by Word & Deed, plus some material donations, volunteer machinery workers, and laborers from the villages.
“What a blessing to see various ministries, individuals and the community itself come together to bless the citizens of a vibrant community like Monjas with such a vital need. Despite their lack of financial resources, this community had the will and made the effort to see this project come to fruition. Thank you, Word & Deed for providing this community with hope through your very generous donation.” – Brian Dennett, National Director, AMG Guatemala.
