It was a bright Guatemalan morning near the stunningly beautiful Lake Atitlán. A group of deacons were gathered around and we were discussing poverty. In some ways, the discussion seemed totally out of place. The poor don’t belong in such a pristine setting. And yet, poverty is just as much part of our reality as the impressive volcanoes that surround this famous lake.

For the past 17 years, John and Connie Otten have been serving with AMG International and Word & Deed at the Centro Medico Cristiano in Cubulco, Guatemala. The medical centre serves the area’s poor with a hospital, pharmacy, elective surgery, nutrition centre, radio program, and agriculture programs.
