Word & Deed Update
The La Palabra (The Word) Christian School building project in Guatemala continues to make rapid progress.  The project is scheduled to be completed in the next few months in time for the new school year in Guatemala which begins in January.  The contractor and all the workers are Guatemalan.  Word & Deed's approach is to use local labor and to only introduce work teams where they are needed.  This shows respect and confidence in the local...

The Famine in the Horn of Africa

While Word & Deed doesn't have projects in the area affected by the famine, our sister organization, Word & Deed in The Netherlands, has several partners who do and we will be helping to fund their relief efforts.  Initially the work will focus on food, medical assistance and other basic necessities.  Simultaneously, they will be working with local partners to develop structural solutions to the problem of drought in East Africa. ...

Word & Deed, in partnership with Adoration Christian Centre (our partner in Haiti) and a group of engineers, recently began a 200 home repair project in Haiti.  The engineers (miyamotointernational.com) have developed a methodology which allows homes, badly damaged by the 2010 earthquake, to be repaired using various reinforcement techniques (beams, block replacement, roof repair or replacement etc.).  A significant portion of the work is being done by home owners themselves who are...

This past spring marked ground breaking ceremony for the new La Palabra (the Word) Christian School building project in  Monjas, Guatemala.  Just recently (May,2011),  I (Rick Postma) had the privilege of visiting the project.  I was amazed by what I saw.  Most of the walls for this 12 classroom school were almost entirely up to the roof line.  The two young engineers, who run the company which is building the school, took him on a tour and showed how the school is being built...
